Vegan BBQ Pizza

Vegan BBQ Pizza

An out-of-this-world, delicious pizza!

I love bbq pizza but honestly have never been into the texture of chicken that is in most of them. Instead, I used chickpeas and it made this pizza so amazing. From the homemade barbecue, to the chickpea flavor and texture, this pizza really blew my mind.

Ingredient details:

  • Yeast – I just used a packet of rapid rise yeast. It’s easier and I’ve never had a problem with the packets of yeast not being active.
  • Flour – I always use King Arthur flour, but any kind will do. I have tried it with gluten free and it’s also great but a bit more dry.
  • Chickpeas – I just used canned chickpeas /garbanzo beans.
  • Onion – I feel like red onion is the only good option for this pizza.
  • Sauce – This is the same homemade barbecue as my BBQ sheet pan veggies. There’s quite a few ingredients that go into it, but it’s so easy to make because you just throw everything into a food processor and blend. Stress free and delicious!

Recipe List

Ingredients:

*optional: 2 tbsp semolina flour

1 tbsp active dry yeast

1 1/2 cups water

3 cups flour

1/2 red onion

15oz canned chickpeas

1 cup vegan mozzarella

Barbecue Sauce:

1/2 cup dates

2 tbsp tamari

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

6 oz tomato paste

1 tbsp dijon mustard

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp paprika

5 cloves garlic

1/4 tsp pepper

1/2 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450° (I recommend to use a 15in pizza stone that is heated before baking).
  2. Mix flour, water, and yeast and kneed together for 5 minutes.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise for 10-30 minutes.
  4. Make the sauce by combining all the sauce ingredients and pulsing in a food processor or blender until smooth.
  5. Once dough is ready, spread out over parchment paper (add optional semolina flour underneath the dough for extra crunch).
  6. Shape your dough and spread barbecue sauce over top. Add a little bit at a time so as not to make the sauce too heavy.
  7. Add chickpeas, onions, and cheese evenly over the sauce.
  8. Bake on 450° for 15 minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and serve!
